I had the opportunity to attend the Canadian Institute of Forestry Annual Meeting in Grande Prairie this week. Lots of great talks and discussion of important forestry issues including a session on what the future of forestry holds. But of course the highlight was the field trip where my group looked at tree improvement and mixedwood silviculture. We saw spruce and pine seed orchards, aspen and poplar high productivity plantations, and natural spruce regeneration for mixedwood management. The field trips are always the best part of conferences!
